The Slovenian Consumers' Association published the black list of price hikes

14 December 2006

National postal company Posta Slovenije and retailer Spar top the black list of companies at which price hikes were recorded before the 1 January euro changeover, the Slovenian Consumers' Association (ZPS) said on Thursday.

Posta Slovenije raised the price of redirecting mail to a new address by 164% between February and November, shows the list, unveiled to the public in Ljubljana. Spar earned its place for a 54% increase in the price of a brand of frozen French fries, revealed Breda Kutin, the ZPS president.

Kutin pointed to the services sector and the areas with a lack of competition as the most problematic ones regarding unjustified price hikes. "We have often heard that reasons for price hikes should be taken into account. As the consumers' association we can take notes of these reasons, but the fact remains that certain items went up in price," Kutin said.

Prices also rose in parking, cinema tickets and the banking sector since the Pricewatch project was launched in March in a bid to prevent unwarranted price hikes.

The entire list of price hikes is available at the association's home page and on the www.evropotrosnik.si website.
